Empowering the Next Generation of Agricultural Leaders
Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan addressed the National Agricultural Students Conference on Oct 27, 2025 which was held at Pusa, New Delhi, emphasizing the importance of improving agricultural education and creating more opportunities for students.
The event was organized jointly by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), brought together thousands of agricultural students, professors, and scientists from across India.
Focus on Better Education and Employment Opportunities
Shri Chouhan expressed concern about the vacant posts in agricultural universities and institutions across the country. He directed ICAR to immediately fill these positions and announced that he would write to all Chief Ministers to take similar action.
“There should be no compromise with the future of agricultural students at any cost,” he said.
He stressed that quality education in agriculture is essential for progress of India and well-trained agricultural professionals are the backbone of a self-reliant nation.
Encouraging Innovation and Student Participation
To make agricultural education more dynamic and creative, Shri Chouhan instructed ICAR to form a student team to gather innovative ideas and suggestions from students across India.
He also proposed grading agricultural universities and colleges to promote healthy competition and constant improvement in teaching and research.
Learning from the World, Building in India
Highlighting the need to stay globally competitive, Shri Chouhan encouraged ICAR to study international best practices in agricultural education and adapt them to the Indian context.
He added that the development of agriculture and rural areas together could reduce migration and strengthen India’s self-reliance.
Hands-On Learning for Real Change
The Minister also advised that every agricultural student should visit farms at least once a year. By working directly with farmers, students can understand real-world challenges and develop practical solutions to improve productivity and sustainability.
“True living is in giving life to others. Agricultural students should set goals and live meaningfully,” Shri Chouhan said, urging students to lead purposeful lives.
Conclusion
The conference became a platform for direct dialogue between the government and young agricultural minds. Students shared their experiences, discussed new technologies, and reaffirmed their commitment to building a stronger agricultural sector.
Shri Chouhan assured them that their suggestions would be heard and implemented where possible, and extended his best wishes for their future.
