The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed draft Amendments to the Food Labelling Regulations 2020, on 17th February 2025. These changes were made with the approval of the Central Government through the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006.
The draft regulations are published for public notice, with a 60-day period from the date of publication in the Official Gazette, after which the FSSAI will consider any objections or suggestions related to these changes. The FSSAI will welcome all the feedback that is received within 60 days.
Proposed Draft Amendments to the Food Labelling Regulations by FSSAI:
1. The regulations will be called the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Amendment Regulations, 2025.
2. Changes in the existing regulations (2020):
- Nutritional Information
In the nutritional information section, an additional requirement is added:
In case of added sugar, saturated fat, and sodium content, the percentage contribution to the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is mandatory to be written in larger font size and bold letters.
(In the Regulation 5.3.b.ii the suggested clause shall be added as ii(a))
- Milk and Milk Products
All the milk & milk products, including composite milk products, should carry a provided logo on their packaging material. The dimensions of the logo are to be followed depending on the principal display panel area, in order to ensure visibility with respect to different pack sizes.
(In schedule I, after para(2) the following clause shall be added as (3))
(Note: Composite milk product is a product that contains milk, milk products or milk constituents as the essential part of the product. It may also contain non-dairy ingredients that are permitted by regulations, but the non-dairy ingredients are not intended to replace any milk constituent. Examples: Shrikhand with fruits, ice cream with nuts or fruits, drinks based on fermented milks, etc.)

Specifications for the logo size:
- Coffee-Chicory Mixture
(In Schedule-II, para (2), sub para 2.2, after clause (2) the new requirement to be inserted)
The labels of Coffee-Chicory Mixture Must include the declarations in clauses (1) and (2) of sub-para 2.2, in capital letters and within a rectangular box on the front of the package.
As per the clause, every package containing a mixture of Coffee and Chicory must declare the percentage of coffee and chicory on the label.
(Note: Coffee-Chicory Mixture means the product prepared by mixing roasted and grounded coffee and roasted and grounded chicory, which is free from any dust, dirt or any rancid, off flavor. The coffee content in the mixture should not be less than 51% of the total mixture by weight
