FAQs
Dairy technology is a specialized field of science that deals with the journey of milk from farms where milking is done to the consumers ensuring the milk and milk products are safe for consumption. It includes the procurement, processing, quality, safety, and packing of milk and milk products. The Core subjects like Dairy Chemistry, Dairy Microbiology, Dairy Technology, Dairy Engineering, and Dairy Business Management provide a comprehensive understanding of every aspect of milk and milk products.
- Ensuring Food Safety
- Extending Shelf Life
- Improving Nutritional Value
- Creating a Diverse Product Range
- Optimizing Production Efficiency
The main job role of dairy technologists is to ensure the quality, safety, and innovation of dairy products. Their main task is to develop new milk products, optimize production processes, implement quality control measures, and comply with food safety regulations. By combining scientific knowledge and practical skills, they also contribute to the sustainability and efficiency of the dairy industry.
To become a dairy technologist, you must complete an Undergraduate course (B.Tech) in Dairy Technology from various government or private universities. For admission in this, you need to have PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) subject in 12th class. Along with this, you need to qualify for the entrance exam conducted by a respected university.
The BTech Dairy Technology course is specially designed in such a way that it covers every aspect related to milk. It consists of the following core subjects:
Dairy Chemistry: This course explores the chemical composition of milk and milk products, providing an in-depth understanding of each component and the chemical reactions involved in transforming milk into various products. It also covers topics like adulteration and contamination in milk, their detection methods, and ensuring quality and safety in milk processing.
Dairy Microbiology: Dairy Microbiology mainly focuses on the natural microflora in milk and milk products and the study of harmful pathogens and foodborne illness-causing organisms. In this course, you will learn how to estimate and control these microbes in dairy products. The course also covers prebiotics, probiotics, starter cultures, bacteriophages, microbial contamination, their source, detection methods, and confirmatory tests, making it comprehensive and fascinating.
Dairy Technology: This course covers both technical and practical aspects of dairy, starting from milk processing and packaging to transforming milk into various delicious products. You will also learn about important processes like standardization, homogenization, pasteurization, UHT (Ultra High Temperature) processing, sterilization, and spray drying. The course also includes topics like market milk, traditional Indian dairy products, cheese, ice cream technology, and by-product processing, providing a complete understanding of the dairy industry.
Dairy Engineering: In this course, you will study dairy equipments, their principle and how these equipments works, the design of the processing plant, the layout of the RMRD section, heat exchangers, pasteurization flow, thermodynamics, process engineering, regeneration efficiency, refrigeration systems, thermodynamics, fluid flow, etc.
Dairy Business Management: This course will help to understand the operational, financial, and marketing aspects of running a successful dairy enterprise. It includes business planning, supply chain management, quality assurance, and compliance with industry standards. The course also explores entrepreneurship opportunities and strategies for effectively managing resources and manpower in the dairy industry.
